Ideas for exploring the Rhône Valley while keeping cool

Summer in the Rhône Valley has an irresistible charm: light-drenched landscapes, the song of cicadas, and estates bustling with life. Yet, when the sun settles in for the long haul, it is also a pleasure to find activities that offer a bit of cool relief. The good news is that the Rhône vineyards are packed with experiences that let you enjoy summer without overheating. From exhibitions in tasting rooms and tasting cruises on the Rhône to night-time strolls and cellar tours—here is a selection of ways to escape the summer heat for a few hours.

A cultural break in the heart of the wine estates

On the hottest days, you might feel like slowing down the pace. That is precisely what a handful of wine estates offer through cultural experiences.

In Arpaillargues-et-Aureillac, near Uzès, the exhibition "Regards au travers des vignes" (Glimpses Through the Vines) invites visitors to discover the wine-growing landscape through the eyes of two contemporary artists, Léa Toutain and Eugénie Didier. Hosted at Domaine Deleuze Rochetin, this immersive exhibition draws direct inspiration from the vineyards of the Uzège region. Blending painting, storytelling, and quiet contemplation, it offers a cultural interlude sheltered from the intense heat while keeping you connected to the vineyard.

Further north, in the Diois region, the Clairette Museum at Caves Carod offers a delightful escape when temperatures soar. Visitors can explore recreations of early 20th-century vineyard and winemaking trades, as well as the history of Clairette de Die and local traditions.

The added bonus: a tasting session to round off the visit, of course!

On the water or under the stars: savoring the vineyard at nightfall

As the heat gently subsides, vineyards reveal a different side of their character. Among the summer’s most unique experiences, the "Apéro sur l’eau" (Aperitif on the Water) between Saint-Joseph and Hermitage ticks every box. Aboard the *Canotiers* boat, you cruise the Rhône River, passing between the iconic slopes of Saint-Joseph and the Hermitage hill. The river’s cool breeze accompanies a tasting of Northern Rhône Crus paired with local specialties. The sunset over the hills adds a touch of magic to this summer getaway.

A different atmosphere, yet the same promise of a delightful experience, awaits at “Entre Vignes et Lumières” experience (Between Vines and Lights) at the Domaine de la Bouvaude in Drôme Provençale. At nightfall, an immersive two-kilometer trail transforms the vines into an enchanting setting. A blend of light displays, projections, soundscapes, and a walk beneath the stars creates a timeless moment. The vineyard becomes an open-air stage where the cool evening air is truly savored.

What we love: Vineyard landscapes enhanced by golden light or the darkness of night—views rarely seen from this perspective.

In the cool of the wine cellars: understanding wine where it is born

If there is a natural refuge during a heatwave, it is undoubtedly the wine cellar. Their constant temperature makes them the perfect places to deepen your knowledge while enjoying a cooler atmosphere.

In Bourg-Saint-Andéol, Domaine Les Amoureuses offers a unique experience focused on wine-aging methods. The tour takes participants into the heart of the cellar, followed by a comparative tasting of wines aged in amphorae versus those aged in barrels. It is a hands-on way to understand how the aging vessel influences the wine’s aromas, texture, and character.

In Vacqueyras, Domaines Aimé Arnoux also opens its cellar doors to reveal the behind-the-scenes process of winemaking. From the arrival of the harvest to the aging stage, visitors discover the steps that shape the appellation’s wines. The tour concludes with a guided tasting, allowing you to put what you have just learned into practice.

Good to know: these tours are particularly pleasant in the middle of the day, when outdoor temperatures are at their peak. It is the perfect excuse to spend a little extra time in the cool of the cellars!

Ultimately, enjoying the Rhône Valley vineyards in summer means embracing the local pace of life: exploring a cellar with thick stone walls, setting off on a tasting cruise along the river, waiting for dusk to stroll through the vines, or treating yourself to a cultural interlude at a wine estate. These are all wonderful ways to savor the season—punctuated by welcome moments of cool relief.
