A road trip in the Côtes du Rhône Gardoises

In the south-east of the Gard Department, the Côtes du Rhône Gardoises stretch along the right bank of the river, bordering the Occitanie region. This historic cradle of the Côtes du Rhône has nurtured vines since ancient times, and boasts no fewer than seven appellations. With discoveries to be made both culinary and cultural, it’s the perfect spot for an unforgettable getaway. Why not follow our 4-step itinerary?

Route des vins en Côtes du Rhône Gardoises

Step #1 - The Gard Rhodanien Wine Museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze

The mediaeval town of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, nestled in a meander of the river Cèze, is renowned for its thriving 800-year-old market. This regular Wednesday morning event is almost as much of a visitor attraction as the Gard Rhodanien Wine Museum, housed in the welcoming surroundings of the Espace Rabelais wine tourism centre, where fun, interactive displays take you on a sensory journey of discovery to the heart of the Côtes du Rhône Gardoises vineyards. There’s plenty to keep little ones entertained too, with games and activities to introduce them to the world of grapes and biodiversity.

Our tip: After exploring the museum, take time to stroll through the mediaeval old town.  It’s well worth it. You’ll see ancient façades, ornate doorways and elegant mansions – not to mention the picturesque lanes!

Step #2 - The vineyards of Tavel

This area is best known for the legendary rosés of AOC Tavel and AOC Lirac. Visit  Domaine de la Mordorée, where a walk through the vines will introduce you to both. Discover a terroir of rounded pebbles, fine clay, granite and sand, on hillsides overlooking the flowing waters of the Rhône; learn about the principles of biodynamics and encounter the vineyards’ flora and fauna. From the Vallongue plateau, admire breathtaking views of the Alpilles and Mont Ventoux on the horizon,  then back at the winery, treat yourself to a tasting of the Domaine’s diverse range of wines.

Our tip: On your way back from Tavel and Lirac, stop off in nearby Avignon before heading south for the next step of your tour.

Step #3 - A weekend in the life of a wine grower in Domazan

When you’re sitting comfortably with your friends sipping a glass of wine, it’s hard to imagine just how much work goes into making your drink. A winemaker’s life is tied in to the rhythms of nature and the cycle of the vineyard year. To show you a little of what’s involved, Domaine des Romarins in Domazan invite you to experience a weekend as a winemaker. This two day experience immerses you in vineyard work – pruning, trellising, or harvesting, depending on the season – along with an introduction to wine tasting and blending. An overnight stay at the Domaine is included. You’ll also have a chance to explore the Signargues terroir and help with the winemaking process.  It’ll change the way you look at wine!

Getting there: If you like the bustle of the city, head straight to Nîmes, whose famous Roman amphitheatre never fails to impress. If you prefer smaller, picturesque villages and local art, don’t miss Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with its charming narrow lanes.

Step #4 - November in the Côtes du Rhône Gardoises

After your road trip, we’re sure the area has captured your heart. When you return – and we know you will – plan your visit for November, to experience the famous Balade du Primeur, an annual event to celebrate the release of the year’s new wine.

The celebrations start in Bagnols-sur-Cèze with a lively evening of music and wine tasting featuring seven local appellations: AOC Côtes du Rhône régional, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Chusclan, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Saint-Gervais, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues, AOC Cru Tavel, AOC Cru Lirac and AOC Cru Laudun.

The festivities continue throughout the weekend at a variety of Domaines, with activities including meals showcasing local produce, farmers’ markets, tastings and live music. La Balade du Primeur, celebrating its 32nd anniversary in 2025, is the perfect way to explore the Côtes du Rhône Gardoises at a sustainable ‘slow tourism’ pace,  yet still in party mode!
